| Founded in 1874 with a legacy from Thomas Stuart Smith, Painter and collector. The Smith houses a wide range of artworks, historical and archaeological material and an exciting and varied programme of exhibitions. Special children's programmes includes art exhibitions, workshops and school education service. Ailie's Garden opened at the Smith in 2002. It has been planned as an outdoor gallery, biodiversity garden and family activity space. There is a willow tunnel, a
storytelling circle/performance area (where the audience sit on dinosaur teeth seats), an outdoor chess and draughts
board, a giant caterpillar sculpture, a mini labyrinth, and a woodland
