Our hope is to make this tour a truly memorable Scottish Experience. Your guide Derek will take you back to the time of the Picts, Scots,Vikings and Romans. For those of you with Clan connections he will explain the way of life, Culture, ancient dress and weaponry of this Noble Warrior Race. If you have a taste for Scotch we will have a dram along the way. And of course there is the magnificent scenery to admire as we travel at a leisurely pace with lots of stops for photos, short walks etc.
Day 1
Our first day is spent in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Loch Lomond is our largest Loch and the Trossachs is associated with Rob Roy McGregor and Sir Walter Scott the famous novelist. We also stop at Doune Castle, the setting for Monty Pythons ‘the Holy Grail’ and ‘Ivanhoe’.
We stay in Stirling, our base for 2 nights.
Day 2
An early visit to Stirling Castle and then its time for a change of scenery as we head to the east Coast with a visit to St Andrews and the Fishing Villages of Fife. St Andrews is a very Historic Town with an old ruined Cathedral and Castle and of course it is the home of golf. In the afternoon we visit the quaint fishing villages of Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem and Elie.
Day 3
Today we head North to the Highlands, our route takes us across the wild moor of Rannoch and through the spectacular mountain pass of Glencoe. We carry on through Fort William and into the Great Glen where we take the ‘Road to the Isles’. We arrive at Eilean Donan Castle, then it is over the sea to Skye via the new bridge where we are based for 2 nights in the picturesque town of Portree.
Day 4
Today we explore the Island taking in the Trotternish peninsula with its outstanding coastal scenery. Learn of the legendary Flora McDonald and visit her grave at Kilmuir. We have optional visits to Dunvegan Castle where the chiefs of Clan McLeod have lived for over 700 years, Talisker Distillery and an Iron Age Fort.
Day 5
We start our day by heading for mysterious Loch Ness, stopping at Urquhart Castle where most of the sightings of Nessie have been made. We then pass through Inverness as we head for Culloden Battlefield where Charles Edward Stuarts dream of regaining the British Throne finally ended with the defeat of his gallant highlanders here in 1746. We head South now via Pitlochry and Dunkeld.
Accommodation etc.
Our tour prices do not include accommodation, although will be happy to assist with finding suitable accommodation for your party if you wish.
We recommend small family owned B&Bs as we believe that meeting and staying with Scots is all part of the experience. A 3 star B&B will cost around £30 per person per night sharing, this includes a Scottish breakfast. A 4 star B&B will cost a few pounds more.
Entrance to Heritage Centres is optional and is not included in the price, however we will be stopping at a number of Castles. A Historic Scotland Explorer Pass can be purchased for around £20 (2012 prices).
Luggage is restricted to one medium sized suitcase per person and one small carry on bag
